Rex Specs V2 dog goggles – effective UV protection for your dog’s eyes

Rex Specs V2 dog goggles protect your dog’s eyes from the sun’s UV rays, dust, wind, snow, and branches. These high-quality dog goggles are perfect for active dogs, hunting and sport dogs, and dogs with eye diseases requiring continuous UV protection.

Rex Specs goggles are designed to stay securely on even during intense activity without restricting the dog’s field of vision.

Why are dog goggles necessary?

Dogs’ eyes are exposed daily to strain and damage. Rex Specs dog goggles effectively protect against:

  • sun UV radiation (especially needed on water, snow, tundra, mountains)
  • dust, sand, and street dust
  • sharp branches and twigs
  • wind
  • snow blindness
  • during treatment of eye injuries and diseases (e.g., pannus, chronic corneal inflammation, iris degeneration, eye ulcer)

Rex Specs V2 – dog UV goggles for demanding use

Rex Specs V2 dog goggles are designed for both preventive use and as extra protection during eye injury or eye disease. They are also suitable for continuous use for dogs with a lifelong need for UV protection.

  • All lenses are UV400 rated
  • Filter 99% of UVA and UVB rays
  • Durable polycarbonate
  • Passed the ANSI Z87.1 impact resistance test

Ideal for dogs suffering from pannus (chronic corneal inflammation).

Comfort and fit – dog goggles that stay in place

  • Adjustable straps
  • Multiple sizes for different breeds
  • Padded frames
  • Good ventilation
  • Wide, curved lens that does not distort the field of vision
  • A model widely used also for working and official dogs.

Glasses always come with two lenses:

  • Clear (transparent)
  • Smoke (tinted)

Additional lenses Rex Specs V2 Lenses are available separately.

Rex Specs V2 Goggle – what’s the difference from the previous Original model?

This renewed V2 model from 2022 offers:

  • improved fit
  • a flatter and less noticeable design
  • a wider field of view for the dog

⚠️ V2 lenses are not compatible with the Original model – and vice versa.

Rex Specs dog goggles lens options

  • Clear (included with the goggles) – 92% light transmission, for dim light and hunting.
  • Smoke(included with the goggles) – 20% light transmission, for bright weather
  • Mirror lenses (sold separately) – 20-13% light transmission: color options for those who want style. Strongly darkening options for very bright conditions, boating, fells and mountains, and for dogs with highly light-sensitive eyes.

All lenses, including the transparent Clear color, have the same effective UV protection.

Fitting the goggles & getting the dog used to protective goggles

Acclimate the dog gradually:

  1. Start fitting with frames without lenses
By doing this, you save the lenses from scratching and make fitting & getting the dog used to the goggles easier. Removing and reattaching the lenses is easy.
  2. Reward the dog
Give the dog treats for independently exploring the goggles, approaching them, and pushing its snout through the straps. Don’t push the goggles onto the dog’s head; instead, teach the dog to push its head into the goggles.
  3. Add lenses only when the frames no longer bother the dog.
Start with clear lenses and only then move to darker ones.

Durability of Rex Specs lenses

The lenses are made of highly durable polycarbonate, so they withstand impacts excellently. However, dogs don’t know to protect the lenses, so they inevitably get scratches over time with use. Small scratches don’t yet prevent the lenses from being used. You can also buy replacement lenses for Rex Specs glasses at a low cost, and they are easy to swap into the frames.

Rex Specs dog goggles size selection

1.  Measure the snout circumference in front of the dog’s eyes, around the corners of the mouth, and compare to the size chart. This measurement is the most important.

2. Measure the head circumference about two centimeters above the dog’s eyes. If your dog’s head circumference is clearly larger (e.g., over 50 cm for an X-Large dog), a strap extender may be necessary. See productRex Specs Strap Extender.

Small-Wide version for short-snouted breeds

The Small-Wide size differs in shape from other sizes. It is not a size between S and M, but unlike all other sizes, these goggles are straight instead of curved. Small-Wide fits dogs with a short snout and wide skull, such as Boston Terriers and French Bulldogs. The Small-Wide model also requires the dog to have a snout at least about 3 cm long. If your short-snouted dog’s skull is wider than 38 cm, choose the strap extender, not the Large size (standard sizes are too curved for short-snouted breeds). Mirror lenses are currently not available for the Small-Wide model.

Our German Sheppard loves these
Size: Medium
These cost a bit more than tennis balls, but they are so much nicer and longer lasting. For starters, they stay cleaner than tennis balls because they’re smooth rubber. Dirt won’t build up on them and if anything does stick, like grass or soil, it falls off once the dog slobber dries. They’re also thick, so they don’t fall apart or blow out like a normal tennis ball does in our dog’s jaws after 30 seconds. Our GS chomps on these like crazy and the only damage they’ve suffered is a crack that developed from the edge of the hole, but the crack is growing very slowly and none of these balls have totally failed yet. The balls do whistle when thrown ant high speed and that may help a dog track and locate it, but I’m not sure. Our neighbors hear the whistling too so it’s far from silent. Lastly the orange ball is easy to locate out in our yard, but the dark blue practically disappears.

Great for smaller dogs
Size: Small
These two balls are perfect for the smaller mouthed dog that loves to play fetch. These balls are not only super durable (lots of teeth biting), but float in the baby pool we use for our miniature dachshunds. The value here is much better than you’d find anywhere else. The noise, if bitten hard enough, was “low” at best. Easy to spot/find if overthrown. Will definitely buy again once these are in bad repair; so far, so good-love these for my fur babies!

My dogs favorite balls
Size: Medium
These are great for my dog who always has to have a ball in her mouth. Not too hard so I don't have to worry about her teeth. They last for ever. They do lose their shape a little over time (like I said, she always has a ball in her mouth) they become a little oval in shape. They still bounce, she still chases it and she still chews on it so I don't think she notices or cares. I've gotten her a bag full of these over time and I have only seen one that she chewed a chunk out.

My Dachshunds Love These
Size: Small
These balls are durable, flexible material, highly chewable without being easily destroyed. I stuff them with Milkbone Maro Snacks, which are just the right size to twist into the holes in the ball. My dogs literally get an hour+ chewing and chasing entertainment from these. They chew them, they sometimes 'pop' out of their mouths, go rolling across the floor, dogs chasing them. This satisfies their urge to hunt prey. Dachshunds can easily tear this kind of stuff-it-toy apart. These have lasted for a long time without tearing or shredding. I would NOT recommend them for a dog much larger than a tweenie weenie. They're a bit on the small side and might be swallowed by a larger dog. It would be cool it they also came in a larger size (and probably ball wall thickness also) for the bigger dogs to enjoy. These stuff-it chew balls are better than the kong balls my dogs had before these. Highly recommend them.

My puppy’s favorite fetch toy!
Size: Small
Update Aug 27, 2024: After 10 months, these are still his favorite ball. He’s obsessed with fetching and plays with them all day. They do bounce really high. Unfortunately, the small size aren’t available for sale anywhere anymore. I tried the medium size, and he has a bit of trouble hanging on to them, but he manages. Weirdly, he prefers the orange one, but he also plays with the blue one. My 7 month old Shih Tzu puppy loves to fetch, and these are his new favorites. They’re small enough to fit in his mouth, and they are made of hard plastic, so he’s able to hold on to them. They have a lot of bounce, and this adds to the fun for him. I highly recommend them.
